Balance and Stability
A proper lighting system could ameliorate balance, stability and postural control
Description of the Project
The project will provide caregivers with tools to fine tune the behaviour of the home and its connected services in guiding the elderly in their activities:
- Adaptively reacting to the older adults behaviour changing the environment and available device characteristics
- Flexibly driving attention and behaviour in reaching the older adults goals
The users can set the functionalities of the technical support to control lights and other digital devices when relevant events occur.
In order to be effective for the wide diversity of users, applications should have flexible and highly personalized context-dependent behaviour.
Goals
The objective of the PETAL Project is to provide a platform able to increase elderly autonomy and assist them in carrying out activities of daily living. In particular, we aim to support older adults affected by mild dementia with useful and usable means to increase their awareness and control of their current lifestyle by providing them with relevant and tailored information in an intuitive and natural manner. This will be achieved through an intelligent platform able to monitor users’ behaviour (movements, speech, interactions) and support personalized control of lights and appliances in their environment.
Expected results and impact
The platform should:
- enable end users to personalize environments by providing Trigger-Action rules;
- allow people without specific technical background to i.e. change lights, set up reminders, alarms, and messages for promoting a healthier lifestyle, check cognitive exercise adherence, support monitoring functionalities;
- include an underlying infrastructure able to detect contextual changes according to sensors present in the environment.
Important success metrics will be flexibility, cost and benefit of the proposed solution with respect to traditional approaches. The envisioned solution can contribute to support different groups of beneficiaries: older adults, their informal carers and the health workforce.
